What is IC Recessed Lighting?

by DoItYourself Staff

Insulation contact, or IC recessed lighting is designed to be installed in walls and ceilings where it might come in contact with insulation. Since 1982, building codes mandate that recessed lights must be IC-rated to prevent fires.

Insulation Contact Recessed Lighting

Lighting that is IC-rated by the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) can be installed with insulation directly around it. The heat from the bulb is shielded so that it does not emanate from the recessed can, which protects homes and businesses from fire. IC recessed lights also usually use lower wattage bulbs than the original recessed light models.

History of IC Recessed Lighting

Original recessed lighting did not consider fire safety. When a light bulb would get hot, so would the enclosure and the insulation around it. Insulation would trap the heat and could cause combustible material around it to catch fire. This prompted the UL to make amendments to their ratings, and manufacturers worked to improve their product. Enter IC recessed lighting.

Benefits to Installing IC Recessed Lighting

The homeowner can feel confident when installing IC recessed lights because there is a very low chance of fire or heat-related damage to your attic. Insulation contact recessed lighting can be installed in any insulated area of your home.
