What Is Radon Mitigation?

by DoItYourself Staff

Radon mitigation is the process of removing the concentration of radon gas in an area, such as a house or an office building. Radon is an odorless gas that is colorless in nature. It is a by-product of the decay of radon’s parent element, radium. Building materials such as granite and other rock formations in the subsoil emit radon gas.

Ways to Mitigate Radon

There are many ways to mitigate radon. The first is to improve the ventilation of the house or building to avoid the accumulation of radon gas. Another way is to seal the areas where radon gas can accumulate, such as in the water drainage and basement areas. You can also install a radon sump system in your basement to mitigate radon. The last method in mitigating radon gas is to adjust the air pressure in the wall spaces of the home or office building to prevent radon gas from entering.

Effects of Radon Exposure

Radon gas exposure is known to be the major cause of lung cancer in the United States.
