What is the best method to insulate windows for the winter?

by DoItYourself Staff

There are several suitable methods to insulate windows. One common solution is to use a self adhesive weather stripping made of rubber. This stripping should be cut to fit the window and applied directly to the frame, closing any gaps and preventing drafts. Adhesive may be left on the frame when the stripping is removed. Insulation kits for windows are available at home improvement stores. This basically consists of a shrink wrap film which is taped to the inside of the window. The film is then heated with a hair dryer to shrink it and eliminate bubbles and wrinkles. Insulated shades and heavy curtains are attractive but expensive insulation solutions.
