What is the best way to paint a faux brick wall?

by DoItYourself Staff

The best way to paint a faux brick wall is by preparing the surface first. In order to get the best finish, paint onto a smooth surface or a concrete surface, as painting onto textured wallpaper will throw off the overall effect. Firstly, paint the mortar using a grey acrylic paint. Secondly, decide on a brick shape. Use masking tape for precise squares that will look like brand new bricks, or use stencils or free hand drawing for creating the appearance of old bricks. Finally, paint the brick shapes. Burnt browns are the best colors to use for imitating brick, and each brick should be two-tone, an effect you can achieve by blending a dark brown at the bottom into a lighter brown at the top of each brick.
