What to Do about Dishwasher Detergent Dispenser Cracks
what you'll need
- Replacement detergent dispenser
- Screwdriver
- Replacement spring
A dishwasher uses dishwasher detergent to automatically wash our dishes without us even having to lift a finger. This is a wonderful invention which is becoming increasingly popular. However there are lots of problems which can affect a dishwasher and make it less functional.
If you ever experience any of these problems then you will quickly learn that there are lots of different things that you can do to fix the problem. Repairing problems with your dishwasher will make it much easier to use and much more reliable. Dishwashers are expensive so it's worth repairing them wherever possible.
Step 1 - Sourcing your Dishwasher Dispenser
Purchase a replacement dishwasher dispenser. These are often specific to the brand of dishwasher you are trying to repair. Your first port of call should be to the manufacturer of the dishwasher. These manufacturers often have a wide range of spare parts available for their machines. They are also normally affordable and easy to order.
You will be able to phone up and order the part and get it mail order within a couple of days. You really shouldn't have any problem ordering the dishwasher dispenser.
Step 2 - Removing the Old Dispenser
The dishwasher detergent dispenser is normally a small spring loaded flap which will contain a tablet used to wash the dishes. Over time and due to hot temperatures this can become brittle and break. You will need to carefully remove the dishwasher dispenser, although it doesn't really matter if you break this one it's a good idea to remove it carefully so you know how to put the new one in.
Depending on your dishwasher you may have to unscrew a screw or simply pull the dispenser out away from the dishwasher. The dispenser hatch should pull away fairly easily but stop if you feel it about to crack. The hatch is spring loaded and this is designed to open automatically. Ideally you should try to keep the old spring. Watch for it when you undo the hatch because it is liable to fly off.
Step 3 - Replacing the Dispenser
Once you've removed the old dispenser you can then start fitting the new one. This is actually pretty easy to do and it normally slots into place. Follow the same directions you just carried out to remove the dispenser only in reverse. Tighten the screw and reattach the spring. If you lost your original spring then you will need to purchase a new one of these, they are very cheap, however you must ensure you're choosing the right type.
Step 4 - Testing
All you need to do is test the dispenser and make sure that it opens and closes freely. Sometimes if the dispenser is not fitted quite right then it will fight against itself when it tries to move. This will prevent the hatch from being able to open which will prevent the dishwasher from using the detergent.
