What to Do When an Air Conditioner Filter Is Clogged

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Warm soapy water or chemical cleaner
  • Protective gloves
  • A replacement filter
  • Dust mask

The air conditioning filter is one of the most important parts of an air conditioning system. If your system is not performing as it should, then the chances are the filter is clogged and will need to be cleaned or replaced.

Step 1 - Remove the filter from the system

Put on your protective masks and gloves. Remove the access hatch and carefully remove the filter and inspect it. Should the filter be severely clogged, it is advisable just to replace it. Go to step 3

Step 2 - Clean The Filter

If the filter is a window filter, simply wash thoroughly in soapy water and allow to dry. Ensure the filter is completely dry before returning it to the unit. Large outdoor conventional filters can be cleaned with a chemical cleaner, but as they tend not to be as effective after use, it is advisable to replace them.

Step 3 - Vacuum The Outside Fins

The outside unit should also be maintained. Ensure it is free from grass and other debris, and then vacuum the thins to remove dust.

Step 4 - Replace The Filter

Whether you have replaced the filter or cleaned it, shut the access hatch and tidy up. Mesh filters will need to be replaced. Regular monthly maintenance on air conditioning systems improves their performance and cuts down on power consumption.
