What type of paint should I use when painting a boat hull?

by DoItYourself Staff

When deciding to paint boat hull--whether it is made of wood, steel, aluminum, or fiberglass--you have to take note of these 2 things: 1 it must be of marine grade, and 2 it must not contain chemicals that the EPA disapproves of, particularly lead and isocyanates. Marine grade means that the paint can withstand being exposed to salt water and marine organisms, since the boat hull is the part that is always submerged in water. EPA approved paint means that the marine paint is free from chemicals or compounds that can harm the sea and its living inhabitants.
