Where to Find a Wholesale Garment Rack

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Computer and Internet access
  • Local business directory or Yellow Pages

A wholesale garment rack, of the type used in the back rooms of stores for keeping clothes, can be a great storage solution in your home. A wholesale garment rack is efficient in terms of space, and it's portable. However, garment racks are not items that you can readily find on sale in a store, so tracking them down can be a quite a chore. Follow these steps to jump-start your search.

Step 1 - Check with Store Staff

While you won’t find wholesale garment racks on regular sale in a store, you can talk to sales staff and managers about buying older racks that aren't being used anymore. Any store that sells clothing, especially department stores, will most likely have a large number of them. If you are able to offer the right price, the store may be willing to part with one or two.

In some cases, managers might not have the authority to sell a wholesale garment rack, but they may be able to connect you with someone who can make the decision. Although this option is time-consuming, you could end up buying used racks at a reasonable price.

If a store is going out of business, they will generally sell fixtures and fittings to minimize their losses. Be sure to check with any clothing stores in your area that are going out of business. They will be open to reasonable offers, so you should be able to pick up a bargain.

Step 2 - Shop at Online Auction Sites

You can buy virtually anything at online auction sites. You may find a wholesale garment rack offered at a set price or up for bid. You can find some real bargains at auction sites, but you should set an upper limit for your bidding. Also be aware that unless the seller is local enough for you to pick up the wholesale garment rack, you’ll also need to pay postage and packing on the item. The extra charges can greatly increase your total cost.

Step 3 - Contact Clothing Manufacturers

Clothing manufactures use a lot of wholesale garment racks for their items. If you live close to a company that makes clothes, approach the company about buying a rack.

They may offer older racks in different states of repair. Inspect the racks before you buy. Look for racks that are solid and make sure the wheels work and the fittings are secure. The company might have a set price or be open to offers.

Step 4 - Consider Other Sources

There are companies that sell store fixtures and are willing to sell directly to the public. Be aware, however, that these items are new, so you’ll have to pay top dollar for them.

You can also find wholesale garment racks for sale in the most unusual places. Haunt flea markets, for instance, where several people will be selling clothes. Some of them might have racks. Make a reasonable offer on the rack, and they might accept your offer.

If you have good repair skills, you can also buy racks that need work and repair them yourself. However, you might need to strip down two or more racks to make one good rack, so you should buy very cheaply.
