Where to Learn More about Accessible Design

by DoItYourself Staff

You can learn more about accessible design by going online and searching for websites that provide information on how to make living spaces more accessible. Accessible design, which is a take on universal design, entails making spaces more open and usable by everyone, regardless of physical ability. An accessible design is one that allows free access to all parts of a home or other space without limitation and uses the individual’s ability to easily access all elements within the design, such as use of a kitchen and kitchen appliances, taking a bath freely, easy movement between floors or on a floor and other design elements.

Working with Architects and Home Builders for Information

Architects, home builders and others are doing more to incorporate accessible design elements into their plans and provide this information to the public in an accessible way in order to incorporate these ideas. The web has a wealth information on accessible design plans and the process used to accomplish accessible designs.

Using a Local Library

A local library may also be able to point you in the direction of organizations and groups that are actively involved in the accessible design movement. A library is a good source for information that is free and a low-tech way to gain insight on accessible design.
