Which is the Load Side of an Electrical Floor Outlet?

by DoItYourself Staff

The load side of an electrical floor outlet will depend on whether the outlet is a standalone, or if other outlets are feed downstream from it. To understand load, you will need to know what line is. Line is the wiring cable that delivers the power from the service box to the outlet or switch. If you have ever looked at the back of an outlet you will see two silver or nickel colored screw terminals, two gold or brass colored screw terminals and a green colored one. One wire cable set coming from the service panel and hooks up the white wire to silver, the black wire to gold, and the ground wire to green, this is the line.

Understanding Load

Load side is the wire cable or outlet that is connected to a device requiring power to operate. For example, the wiring connected from the service panel to a floor outlet. You plug a light into the outlet this is the load. The reason to know this is to make sure the outlet is rated or can handle the entire load imposed upon it without overheating.
