In the past a coal fireplace was a common part of most houses. Coal works extremely well for generating a lot of radiant heat so most of these coal fireplaces were designed with a network of pipes that went throughout the house. These were what provided heating for the home during colder months. Today there are better alternatives for heating a home and coal is not a good material to burn.
The Problems with a Coal Fireplace
Coal has two major drawbacks which make it a poor choice for a fireplace. Coal is a naturally occurring material which is made up of carbon materials. When it burns it puts off large amounts of carbon emissions which are bad for the environment.
Coal also creates a lot of waste product when it burns. This waste product is difficult to dispose of in a safe fashion and it can cause problems if it is dumped in a standard environment and not properly disposed of.
