Why Won't a Battery Charge Past a Certain Percentage?

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • The device battery you wish to charge
  • The charger
  • The instruction manual for the device
  • A safe place to plug it in

Batteries like any device have their limitations and this should be remembered when attempting a battery charge.  At a certain point you need to understand a little bit of the science behind what makes your equipment work the best in order to get the best performance from it.

Understanding the Science

On many devices this end of the process of charging is signaled in some way, but for many others it is a manner of checking the manual to find how long the device needs to be charged for it to work at its maximum level. To charge devices, try the following steps.

Step 1 – Familiarize Yourself with the Manual

Read the manual carefully to find out how long to charge your device.  Over charging is not usually an issue, but taking the battery out before it really has a chance to take a full charge can cause the device to be unable to operate at its peak.  Most devices manuals have a lot to tell you about the battery used in the device and how to extend its life.

Step 2 – Turn off the Piece of Equipment

Unless otherwise indicated in the manual, shut down everything on the device so the charging the piece of equipment is easier and faster.  Otherwise, you are using the electricity to keep the device working as well as charging the battery.  This may or may not prolong the charging process, but it definitely leeches electricity and can raise your power bills if you do it often enough.

Step 3 – Check the Power Outlet

Make sure the plug you use is working well.  If it seems your device isn’t charging enough check other appliances using this plug to see if there is a problem such as short with it.  Also make sure there is nothing around the plug or outlet that would keep the device from charging fully.

Step 4 – Inspect the Charging Unit

Check the plug and charger the device uses for any flaws or damage.  Something as small as a kink in the wiring of the charger can keep the device from getting a full and complete charge it needs to operate at peak efficiency. It is also a good idea to check the cradle of the device when it is unplugged for anything that might keep the battery from making a good connection.

Step 5 - Check with the Device Manufacturer

If the device isn’t getting the right charge and you have checked everything, try calling the manufacturer to see if this is a known issue with your device.
