Willing Burning Autumn Leaves Release Dangerous Chemicals?

by DoItYourself Staff

Autumn leaves have to be bagged or burned. If your area allows you to burn leaves, you need to be careful not to breath in the fumes. Usually, leaves are slightly wet from laying on the ground. When burned, they emit hydrocarbons that can cause breathing problems and eye irritants that are toxic. This is because the moisture in the leaves causes the smoke to lay closer to the ground. Burning autumn leaves emits this toxin into the environment even if they are completely dry. For a more Eco-friendly way, dispose of them in bags or schedule a pick up from your city if they offer this service.
