Wind generators are quickly becoming a popular residential energy choice. Individuals can harness the power of this simple technology to generate their own electricity, significantly reduce their energy bills, and protect the environment.

How Wind Generators Work

Wind generators collect energy from the wind and change that energy into electricity that can be used by residences. In most instances a residence is served by both the wind generator and the local utility company. When wind speeds are too low to produce usable energy, the residence purchases its energy from the local utility. As wind speeds increase, allowing the generator to produce more energy, the amount of energy purchased from the local utility decreases. 

Property Requirements

Residences must meet several requirements in order to be considered a good candidate for wind generators. The property should be more than one-half acre and unobstructed by buildings or trees. The average wind speeds above the property should average more than 10 mph, and zoning laws must allow the installation of structures taller than 42 feet.

Wind energy is completely safe for the environment. It does not produce pollution or emit harmful gases. Using wind power also offsets the pollution that would normally be produced by purchasing power from the local utility company.

Wind generators typically reduce a household’s electric utility costs by 50% to 90%. Depending on the turbine’s size, geographical location, and local utility policies, a wind generator could produce than 100% of the homes energy needs and possibly result in a “negative” electric bill.
