How to Remove Window Decals

By Susan M. Keenan
Removing window decals from windows can be a tough task if you don't have the correct equipment for the job. However, whether your decals have been forever etched into the windows of your vehicle or simply baked onto your child's bedroom window, complete removal of them is a simple and easy task once you are prepared. Fortunately, more than one solution exists for the proper removal of a sticky decal or two.

Natural Solutions

If the decal hasn't been on the window for too long, clean water and a dull putty knife may be all that is need for the task. Wet the decal and allow the moisture to do its magic for a moment or two. Use a clean rag to sponge the water on or purchase one of the small spray bottles readily available in garden centers, home improvement stores, discount stores, or even the cosmetics area of most stores.

Once the water has soaked into the decal, gently scrap it away using the putty knife. If you have any difficulty or resistance at all, it is best to stop and go to the next natural method of removal before continuing.

Decals that have been on the window for a while are removed more easily using white vinegar. Simply soak the decal with white vinegar using a small spray or mist bottle. A clean rag or sponge can also be used to sponge the water onto the decal. However, it is best to squeeze the sponge or rag out thoroughly to avoid unnecessary dripping.

Once the vinegar has soaked into the decal, gently scrape it away using the putty knife. If you have any difficulty or resistance at all, it is best to stop and allow the vinegar to soak in more thoroughly before continuing. If the decal does not seem to be wet enough at this point, add another dose of white vinegar to it.

Commercial Solutions

Decals on the window are easily removed using WD-40. Spray the decal evenly with the WD-40, being careful not to spray any on you, the curtains, or the window. Use a clean cloth to wipe the WD-40 off the decal and it should peel off the window. If necessary, urge it along with the putty knife.

Another option for removing window decals easily is to spray it with a commercial adhesive remover. If the decal is on your car window, then be sure to purchase a commercial adhesive remover designed specifically for cars. You can usually purchase this at most auto parts or discount stores.

Read the instructions and warnings that come with the adhesive remover and follow the guidelines provided with it. Most likely, you will spray the decal or sticker with the remover and wipe it off with a clean cloth. The sticker should easily come up from the window.

Handy Reminder Tips

  • Purchase a small bottle of white vinegar for cleaning purposes only. Store it with your cleaning supplies.
  • Purchase a few inexpensive putty knives rather than one. This way if one accidentally becomes misplaced, you still have one to use.
  • If time is of the essence and no putty knife is to be found, use a dull kitchen knife that no longer serves a purpose in the kitchen and store it with your cleaning supplies.
  • Purchase a small spray or mist bottle for cleaning purposes only. Store it with your cleaning supplies.

Hi,

There are a few ways to remove decals without damaging the paint. Depending on the size of the surface, i would recommend either a plastic or rubber tool (i would avoid metal razor blades as its easier to scratch the surface?).

The two ways I would recommend are;
1 - Plastic razor blade - it would scratch the surface and is good for small surface areas
2 - Rubber wheel for large areas such as on cars, trucks, shop windows.

There is a demonstration of how this works at www.decalstickerremover.com

You can also use chemicals to remove decals and some work quite well. However, some are only suitable for factory finished paint jobs, so they can not be used on resprays. Its best to check on a small surface firsy

Some ideas have already been suggested in the above article for removing the glue that can be left on the surface. My preference is to use is eucalyptus oil. You can buy it from most supermarkets - plus is smells refreshing

Regards,
Peter
