Wired vs Wireless Computer Networks: Which to Choose?

by DoItYourself Staff

Networking computers is a smart and efficient way of sharing data and connecting to the Internet, other computers and peripherals such as printers. Most people have small networks in their homes, which enable them to transfer files and information between computers and also connect to gaming consoles and other devices. If you are having difficulty deciding between a wired or wireless network, the following points will help you make up your mind.

Wired Computer Networks

A wired computer network is the older, proven method of connecting computers to each other and the Internet. It uses Ethernet cables and network adapters or routers to connect computers, laptops, printers, gaming consoles and other devices to the Internet. Wired computer networks achieve the highest speeds for surfing the Internet, and downloading or transferring files. Devices such as Ethernet hubs, routers, adapters and switches are considerably cheaper than their wireless counterparts.

The major disadvantage of wired computer networks is that you have to connect each device with wires, which can be a hassle if the devices are all in different rooms or levels. You will need professional help installing wires for an Ethernet connection. Also, there is a limit to the range of motion you are allowed with the devices. You can only work inside your home or office, and once you are outdoors, you will not have network connectivity. This is why wired network connections are not a favorite with people who use laptops or other mobile computers.

On the whole, wired computer networks are much more reliable than wireless networks. The major reasons for a failed connection are because of a problem with the service provider, or loose wires. These networks generally do not have as many problems as a wireless connection.

Wireless Computer Networks

A wireless computer network uses a wireless access point to connect computers and other devices to each other and to the Internet. A wireless access point is a device that acts as a node, which receives and transmits data to and from the network. If you use a wireless network, there is no hassle of drilling holes, installing wires and running the cables to each device to be connected. All you have to do is install the program on your computer, add the wireless access point, and wait for the wireless connection to be activated.

Wireless network devices cost a bit more than the wired networking components. Also, some people do not consider wireless networks as safe as wired networks, because an unsecured network can be intercepted by means of the signals it transmits. It is therefore important to ensure that your home network is adequately protected with a firewall and passwords. Wireless networks can also be affected by interference from other electronic equipment. Signal strength also reduces as you move away from the access point.

The major advantage of a wireless network is that you can carry your laptop to any room in the house, or maybe even outdoors, and remain connected to the Internet. Of course, the Internet connection must be reliable and the access point must be placed in a spot free of encumbrances, so the signals can travel uninterrupted.
