Wiring Options for Home Security Systems
what you'll need
- System wire
- Wire stripper
- Wire staples
- Wire clips
- Hammer
Generally speaking, a home security system should be installed by a professional alarm system installer. However, there are do it yourself alarm kits that are available at many home improvement stores that are fairly easy to install. The installation of any home security system will require that you install the components of the alarm system before wiring it. For example, you will need to install the switches, fire sensors, window foil as well as the sounder back plate before wiring the system. This will enable you to choose the most appropriate position for sensors and choose the windows and doors that you want protected. After you install all of the alarm system components, you'll then be able to run the wiring from the various locations to the sounder back plate. The following is a convenient guide to help you wire the security system for your home.
Step 1 - Review the Instructions
Before you begin, make sure you carefully review the manufacturer’s instructions about the wire used with your home security system. Most types of alarm wire use both a silver colored conductor and a copper colored conductor that is used for wiring the components to the control panel or sounder. The instructions should indicate which conductor can or cannot be cut for the wiring installation. However, in most cases it will be the silver colored connector that needs to remain intact. You will need to remember this when wiring your home security system.
Step 2 – Running the Wire
Go to the protection point that is farthest away from the sounder. This will usually be a window or door that you will need to protect. However, it may be a motion sensor in a basement or upstairs bedroom as well. Simply determine which area is the farthest from the sounder. Then, use your wire strippers to strip about three quarters of an inch off of the end of the wire. Wrap each wire under a separate terminal screw on the sensor, switch or foil, tighten it and begin running your wire.
Run the wire through the ceiling or along the baseboard using staples. Continue to run the wiring until you come to the next device. Do not cut the wire, but use a knife to separate the side-by-side conductors. Create a separation that is a few inches in length. Then, cut the copper colored wire only. Use the wire strippers again to expose about three quarters of the copper wire and connect them to the terminal screws.
Step 3 - Continue Running the Wire
Once you have connected the second device or sensor in the series, continue running the wire until you come to the next. Always make sure to only cut the copper colored wire and attach the terminal leads. Continue following this method until you work your way all the way to the sounder back plate location. Then, run the two wire cord into the back plate.
Step 4 - Install the Battery Circuit
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for wiring and connecting the battery circuit to your sounder back plate.
Step 5- Connect the Sounder
Again, follow the manufacturer's instructions included with the alarm kit to connect the sounder.
