Wiring Outdoor Wall Lighting Fixtures
When you are wiring outdoor wall lighting fixtures, it is very important that you wire them correctly. If you refitting new lights to an existing wiring set up or making new wiring to create a new fixture, make sure you use the right tools and equipment and follow any manufacturer guidelines.
1 - Power
Make sure you enter the breaker box to your home and turn "Off" any breaker fuses that lead to the wiring area you will be working in. It is imperative that no electricity is flowing through the circuit while you handle bare wires.
To make certain that the circuit has been thrown, return back to the light area and turn on an outlet of an existing light or fixture and make sure it does not come on.
2 – Creating a Wiring circuit
To create a new wiring circuit from an existing junction you will need the correct electrical wiring which should carry the exact same amount of current you require. Fitting a wire which has a lower current capacity will cause failure. Turn off the breaker switch to that junction before you proceed to connect any new wires to it.
Connect the new wires to the junction box correctly and then run them through your chosen route.
3 – Routing
If the light fixture you are attempting to create is on the other side of the outside wall that the new fixture will attach to, you simply need to drill a hole through the wall to route the wire to the new light fitting. Fitting an electrical box inside the wall can help retain wiring and if the new electric light fixture has wires that are joined by screw connectors, you can use the box to store them.
4 – Holes
If you need to create a small opening in the wall to run the wires through for the electrical box, you will be fitting your new light fixture over this hole in front of the electrical box. Once you have finished that you can then screw the light fixture mounting bracket to the wall. This bracket will come with your new light fitting, so once you have mounted it securely, you will be able to affix the new light fixture casing to it.
5 – Mounting the Outdoor Light Fixture
This usually has 2 mounting screws. The mounting bracket that you need to attach will have partnering holes to match up with the exterior fitting. Marry them together and screw the outer mount onto the bracket. Next, you can put a bulb into your new exterior light fitting. Once you have fitted the bulb, go back to the breaker box and flip the power switch back on. Return to your new outdoor light fixture and turn it on.
