Wood Bunk Bed Painting Tips
Because kids are often excessively careless with furniture, there may come a time when you need to paint a wood bunk bed. Whether it’s because the original paint is chipped and scuffed or you are completely redecorating the kids’ room, a coat of paint can give a tired piece of furniture a whole new look.
Prep Area
You need to prepare the area around the bed properly to make sure paint gets on the wood and not anywhere else. If you can, move the bed into the center of the room, away from the walls. Make sure the floor under the bed is covered to protect the carpet from paint splatters. Use old blankets (paint can seep through sheets), plastic drop sheets or old newspapers to cover places you don’t want paint to drip on.
Remove Extra Features
Before you open a paint can, remove any extra features from the bunk bed, such as the ladder and safety rails. These will be easier and safer to paint in the basement or the garage. Having fewer parts to cut out around will save you time and frustration because you will not have to clean up parts that were accidentally painted with the wrong color.
Sand Properly
Even if you are repainting the bunk beds in the same color, sand the original finish down to the bare wood if you can. This will allow for a more even coat and loose bits of the original paint won’t be able to flake off your new paint job. You may need to sand a couple of times, using a higher grit s
