Yoga for Weight Loss

by DoItYourself Staff

Although using yoga for weight loss is a novel idea, this form of exercise offers other benefits, such as more flexibility, greater strength and healthful stress reduction. Several forms of yoga will allow you to lose weight quickly, but the primary one is called Ashtanga or flowing yoga.

Ashtanga Yoga

This style of yoga is based on very vigorous movements with distinctive focus on weight loss. A form of Vinyasa yoga, it belongs to the popular “sweat-drenching” classes and includes Sun Salutations which work wonders for weight loss. Practitioners of this form of yoga are among the most dedicated because in addition to weight loss, it offers many techniques that can be practiced at home. Many of the classes contain like-minded participants, so the goals of weight loss and flexibility are pursued with successful results.

Power and Hot Yoga

Two other vigorous forms of yoga which can also help aspirants to lose weight are Power and Hot Yoga. Power yoga has recently become extremely popular, not only for weight loss, but also for its ability to aid in building strength and endurance. It offers a robust cardiovascular workout, but water bottles must be brought along for extra hydration to replace water loss due to sweating during the class.

Hot yoga, while also vigorous, is not for the meek. In these classes, participants sweat profusely as the exercises, vigorous in themselves, are performed in a heated room. The movements, coupled with the heat and sweating have been proven to provide weight loss in even the most difficult body areas containing body fat. For all classes, it is recommended that if participants are just starting yoga classes, or if very overweight and out of shape, they should choose a beginning level for any yoga class they are considering.

Keep up

Yoga teachers recommend keeping up with yoga, even if a student is not able to come to classes. They say to sustain benefits of yoga, practitioners should initially practice at least every other day, and then when more comfortable with poses, every day. Once the practice of yoga is started it is recommended that students practice at home if they cannot make classes. Many yoga centers recommend videos and even audio recordings for students to use at home. For the do-it-yourself aspirants, it is even recommended that they come up with their own sequences of exercises once they know the basic concepts of yoga. Sessions can vary in length, but most teachers recommend lessons not less than 30 minutes and no longer than 90 minutes.

Additional Yoga Strategies to Lose Weight

It has been medically proven that yoga stimulates metabolism and can help curb appetite cravings, while also providing balance of mind. Yoga is wonderful for lethargic or depressed individuals, as well as frenetic and distressed participants. Although it is not necessary to become a vegetarian, yoga offers may vegetarian recipes that are high in protein and complex carbohydrates. These foods are healthy and help to stimulate metabolism which can provide for sustained energy required to perform yoga.
