Your Aquarium Water Treatment Guide
Whether you’re setting up a brand-new aquarium or doing some maintenance work on an existing one, you will need to do aquarium water treatment. Fish need healthy water to breathe. Having the wrong balance in your aquarium could be fatal for your fish.
Fresh water
If you want to add water to your aquarium, you will need to treat the water first. If you are using tap water, there will be chlorine in it, which will, at the very least, damage your fish’s gills. You can purchase de-chlorinating products at you local pet store. Follow the directions for the product and treat the water before putting it in your fish tank.
Tap water also contains ammonia, yet another chemical that can be fatal to fish. Make sure that you also pick up an ammonia-neutralizing product to add to your water.
PH levels
Once you have an established tank, you will still need to do some aquarium water treatment from time to time to make sure that your water is healthy for your fish. Most people only test the water when they notice that their fish are sick or distressed, but this can be too late. Regular testing will nip any problems in the bud and could save your fish.
Buy PH testing kits to make sure your aquarium is well-balanced. If the tests show that certain levels are too low or two high, show the results to a pet store associate and they will help you get what you need to treat the problem.
