Everything we have looked at so far is in the layout view, but if you look in the top left corner of your document window, you will see two other options. The first is the Galley view and the Galley view again shows you your accurate line breaks, frame breaks and page breaks and a text only mode. So, you are not dealing with all the clutter of all the graphics and images and so on. Then in the middle, we also have the Story view and again this is a more simple view of only the text and instead of seeing all of the frame breaks and page breaks and so on, you are seeing just the flow of the text. If I scroll up and down here, you will see that we actually have access to multiple stories at the same time. To hide an individual story, just click the triangle next to it or to reveal it, click the triangle again. You will see the story title as well as its status. If it is available, that means I can check it out if the status indicator says that it is editing, that means I have it checked out and I am editing that story.

As you have already seen throughout InCopy, there are so many ways to customize this application and the Galley and Story view are no exception. Now, look at the bottom left corner of the screen and you will see the Galley and Appearance Toolbar. We looked at this earlier but it was grade out. Now, we were in Galley or Story view. All of my options are enable and what you can control here is the font that you are going to use for your Galley and Story view, the font size as well as the spacing. So maybe I want to have 150% spacing, to have a little bit more breathability, a little bit more room in my editing environment. Now keep in mind, these settings have no effect whatsoever on the layout of the document. It is just a convenience to you as a writer or an editor using InCopy.

In addition to this customization options, you also have the ability to turn on or off the info column there on the left hand side and that will hide or reveal the names of all the paragraph styles you are using and if we switch back the Galley View, we also have the ability to hide and reveal your line numbers. Of course, you only have a concept of line numbers if you are in the Galley view because the Story view just shows you your plain, text but lots of ways to customize this options right there in the toolbar. For more customization, you can go to the edit menu and choose preferences, Galley and Story display.

On the Macintosh, you would choose Preferences, Galley and Story display from the application menu and within the Galley and Story display preferences, you can control the color of the text, the background and you can even choose a theme. There are a coupe of built in. You have a little retro flashback there with the amber or the classic or the terminal settings and its first builds might seem a little silly and un-equated but if you are person who has been to a lot of time editing text in front of the computer screen, you will know that one of these settings, one of these themes with the dark background, whether we leave text on top is much easier on your eyes. You can also overwrite the preview font, you can enable anti-aliasing to soften the view of the text on screen a little bit and my favorite is the ability to change the thickness of the cursor.

So, you can use the Standard cursor or you can choose the Barbell or one of these thick cursors to make it stand out that much more. I also always make sure that the blink option is on. It might seem a little phonetic at first, but it actually makes it easier to find your cursor when you are spending a lot of time editing text inside of InCopy. So, when you are done customizing those settings or picking a theme, just click OK and enjoy the upgrade.
