Advanced Dreamweaver 8 - How to Control Window Size
Video Transcript
Another really useful tool in Dreamweaver that might have over looked in the past is down here in the bottom right corner of your screen, it controls window size. Now, this option is designed to keep you honest, when you are designing on one of those big monitors and you know that a lot of your users might be using smaller monitors. In fact, many design has to limit their design size of their website to 800 by 600 if they know they have got a lot of users who might have small monitors or some people have gone up now to 1024 by 768 figuring that enough people now have monitors that handle that resolution that you can get away with it.
Now, why would you choose one of the other, it really depends on your audience. If you are designing for other designers or gamers, I am guessing you can go for the bigger screen size. But if you are designing for let us say account and also a lot of them still have pretty small monitors. So, think about your client, think about your audience and design accordingly. But if you are using a really big monitor, then this maybe a good trick for you because when I set this to 600 by 300, you see what happens on my screen. All of a sudden, my design area shrinks. And this is Dreamweaver showing me what somebody with an 800 by 600 we will see. Boy, unfortunately, not a lot on this design. Now, I optimize this design for 1024 by 768 because I decided if you are coming to a scuba site, you are really here for the visual experience. And I wanted to give a bigger visual experience.
One other tip about that feature, if I come up here and I maximize this window size and I am on a PC, if we come back down to this nifty little popup, you will see that all of the options are great out. This never happens on a Mac but if you are on a PC and the work space window, this area in the middle of the screen is maximized; this little options will be great out. That is because Dreamweaver does not seem to be able to resize the screen if it is already maximized. The solution is just to minimize the screen al little bit. Not the whole screen, just the work area in the middle. So, if you minimize here and then comeback down, these options would not be great out and you will be able to use this trick.
