Oh, yes that is right on the money. Basement remodeling, it is really a popular project here in a lot of tristate homes and I will tell you why, you can get a lot of extra space out of the basement. But before you start the project or early on you could make a couple of mistakes that can really cause you headaches.
Here is what you need to do when you first start the project. Look where the floor meets the wall. If there is a crack, I want you to caulk it. I will tell you why, some houses in the tristate area have radon problem and radon is a gas that can escape through that crack. This will help stop those radon leaks.
Number two, when you get ready to layout the walls, make sure that you allow about a three quarter inch or a one inch space between the wall and the foundation wall. Why is that? The foundation walls are often out of square and they are out of plumb.
Now, if you build your wall square and plumb, the back of your wood wall is going to bump up against the foundation wall that going to cause a big problem.
Finally, when you get ready to layout your walls, if you have places where the vertical walls studs are falling directly underneath the floor joists, make sure that the studs are lined up perfectly with the floor joist. It is going to make things a lot easier for any heating people, plumbers or electricians when they go to run their wires, pipes, and ducts.
Okay, these are just a few tips to help your basement remodeling job turn out like a pro. Remember safety first and keep things plumb, level, and square.
