Decking is usually two by four two by six or five quarter by six boards installed on wide faces fine boards that are straight as possible. You should buy about 10% more decking than you estimates as necessary to allow for croaked boards and cutting ways for diagonal patterns such ours you want to buy about 15% more. Boards do very by where they were cut form the tree but in general you want to install each boards to the best looking side as shown for fasteners you can use screws or nails. Deck screws make the strongest fastener but have larger more visible heads than nails. You can get colored screws that closely match your decking. Will be using decks screws on our deck as we mentioned earlier we will be doing a diagonal pattern frame by straight boards we will start laying the diagonal boards first.

We figure a 45-degree angle near the center of the deck and start laying the full length five quarter by six boards. Deck boards must have spacing between them to allow for water and debri to pass between the boards. If you are using pressure treated lumber, you can butt the decking against each other when laying it because it will shrink slightly when it dries. If you are using seeder or red wood synthetic decking you must space them consistently apart usually about an eight of an inch. We run the diagonal boards diagonally from bridge block to bridge block letting the corners run past the blocks later we will trim of the corners. Keep laying the diagonal decking until the entire diagonal section is covered one this step is complete we need to cut of the tips of the angled boards before laying our straight boards.

Snap a chalk line across the cut lines so it follows the center of the bridge blocks now cut of the tips with a circular saw. A nice added touch is to wrap the edges of our diagonal boards with a rounded edge before we lay the framing decking. Now we are ready to lay the straight boards. If the run is to long for one board, which it is on our deck be sure to stager the joints of each row also be sure that each end of the board is on the joist. We minor cut the corner boards on this framing for a nicer look. We laid out the decking so the last row over hangs the headers and rims joist again this adds to the over all ecstatic look to the deck.

On the lower deck we can use one board for each row so no joints are necessary once the boards are laid we cut off the excess again we route the cut ins of the board to give a nice rounded finish look. Now we have two finish frames with decking. We need to add stairs and railings and that is the next and final section.
