Hi! I am Dr. Lauren at petside.com. Many cats are diagnose with diabetes. There are certain risk factors like being overweight that could predispose your pet to becoming a diabetic. If you notice things in your cat like increased drinking, increased urination, increased appetite and weight loss, you should see your veterinarian because these could be signs of diabetes. If your cat is diagnosed with this disease, I am going to show you how to get insulin injections at home.

If your veterinarian prescribes insulin for your cat, it might be either once or twice a day. Also each bottle of insulin lasts for about 60 days. You want to make sure to keep the insulin in the refrigerator and remember to never shake the insulin bottle.

Before you give the injection, take the bottle of insulin and just gently roll it in between your hands. Then once you have drawn up your shot of insulin, you find an area on the back of your pet's neck. The back of the neck is where they have a lot of loose skin and you don't have to worry about hurting them. Then you just gently lift the skin on the back of your pet's neck and find the little pocket, then you take the insulin needle and gently give the injection right into that area.
