There is not really a lot of control you have as a homeowner of what the buildup is going to be on your chimney other than to watch what you burn. There are certain things you should not be burning. Magazines and any type of fabric or anything like that. They really does not belong in a fire in your home. You should stick to, you know, traditional wood burning and things like that.

But ultimately, when it comes to the cleaning of the chimney that is something that a professional chimney sweep should be taking care of, you know. And do that at least once a year, if not twice a year because they really--they know how to do it right and it is a very specific chore or profession and you want to consult with them before trying it yourself. But like I said, the only thing that you really have control of is what you are burning and that would dictate the amount of buildup that is going on in your chimney.
