How to Defend Against Half Nelson

A common term from the top position is a Half Nelson. Often young wrestlers have trouble defending a half nelson. Very simply, you just want to clamp down and turn your body, look in the other direction. Underneath the arm, hand on the head for half nelson. The wrestler is going to clamp down, pull the elbow in tight and look away. A common mistake for wrestlers would be to reach up and peel it off and what that does, it lifts that elbow and makes it much easier to go over.
So we tell our young wrestlers, don't peel it off. Just clamp your arm in tight, turn your whole body, look away and get a wide post on that side.
