9. Perception and Awareness

In open motor skill sports like tennis, perception and ball recognition are essential skills. Although, matches create the most realistic situation, certain training techniques can also help develop these critical skills. For example, to develop opponent awareness while drilling with the machine, have a partner behind the machine moving at the last second to one side or the other. The goal is for the hitter to direct the ball away from the moving opponent.

Another exercise which focuses on ball recognition, focus and quick decision skills is to put different colored balls into a ballmachine. Assign each color ball a different shot selection. A simple example would be with the player to hit all yellow balls down the line, and all two toned balls cross court. This drill is one of those ideas that can become literally hundreds of different drills all by it.
