How to Grow African Violets
Video Transcript
Hi, we are here to talk about tips on how to grow African violets.
I found that the most important factor in the successful growth of flowers and the blossoming of an African violet is the sunlight and the watering.
The sunlight, or I guess the temperature as well, for example the African violets do not like the cold, so when the winter months, I remove the African violet from the window sill where it gets really kind of cold for them. I like to put them in an area where they get either morning full morning sun or afternoon sun, but sun is a good thing.
Watering is particularly important because the soil must always stay somewhat moist but you never water it from the top, you water it from below, so you fill the dish that the African violet sit in with water and it basically drinks from below.
There are all kinds of different colors of African violet and depending on how you set it up in your house, you will either have a lot of blooms or maybe not so many. It does not hurt kids to put a little bit of plant food in the water. Ask your mom or dad to help you with that because there are specific food for plants and African violets. Just a couple of drops added to their water is a good idea.
And it is also a good idea to let water sit out overnight, so that the chlorine content in the water can evaporate into the air before you feed the African violet.
So, enjoy your plants.
