Martin Venderwood: This doesn't lie. It's the latest breakthrough, a simple DNA test developed by genetic researchers studying the effects of sun exposure on our skin. Dermatologist Dr. Charles Lynde, believes many of us are in denial about the results of long-term damage from the sun's rays. He predicts this could change the way skin cancer risk is assessed with a simple test that can be performed at home or at your dermatologist's office.

Dr. Charles Lynde: Now we have a test that you are going to actually measure the amount of DNA damage that has been done on the skin. By the way, this particular test can be done in the privacy of your home, and by the basis of this DNA damage, again, you maybe able to prevent further damage to the skin, not only in terms of potential skin cancer, but from looking old before your time.

Martin Venderwood: The Derma DNA test is a simple process. A sample is taken from the bridge of the nose, and from the inside of the cheek. The DNA samples are tapped, sent to a lab, and the results come back in 14 days.

Dr. Charles Lynde: The test results tell us the kind of real story about what is going on in the skin, the cumulative sun damage that has been in the skin, what is actually happened to the DNA within our skin. On the basis of this, one can then develop an individualized treatment plan, that can actually, not only protect the skin, but also restore some of the skin in terms of aging and also in terms of your risk of developing skin cancer.

Martin Venderwood: The DNA test was certainly a wake up call for Cindy Reynolds. She figured with her dark features, she didn't need to worry too much about sun exposure and skin damage.

Cindy: I was surprised when I got my results. They showed that I am at risk. So in knowing that, I am certainly going to protect myself in the future from the sun.

Dr. Charles Lynde: Up until now, we thought that basically it was fair haired, blonds, blue-eyed people, that were the people who really had to worry about. With this particular new genetic testing, we can now tell that there are people that are very dark skinned and can have dark hair, and rarely burn, and they could also be at risk of developing not only premature aging, but potentially skin cancers.
