How to Play Using Down Stroke Picking Technique
Hi I am Stewart Bull from licklibrarytv.com and welcome to this lesson on down strokes. Now, when I say down strokes, what I mean is every note that you play is going to be played with a down stroke. If I use ultimate picking, I am going to be going down, up, down, up, or up, down, up, down. If I play basic on pentatonic scale using ultimate picking, starting on a down stroke, it is going to sound like this. If I play it using all the down stroke, it is going to sound like this.
Now for me, there is a little bit more white to the sound. I play such as Gary Moore, we will use this technique to get a really aggressive sound. I am hopeful you can hear that and that has got really nice, strong, aggressive quality to it. Now, one of the things that kind of almost goes on hand and hand with using the down stroke in the rock style is muting. And what you want to do is put your hand somewhere down by the bridge and we are going to be using kind of this fleshy part here. And the way that we do this is the further you move forward, the more down it will be. And if ever you move back, the less down it would be. So further back and I am going to start to move forward.
So what you do is you find that position that gives you the amount of damp in that you like. And you use that and what you can do is kind of move between the positions a little bit further back then forward. Put some down strokes for the beat of muting, good measure. Have fun.
