We recently moved this toilet paper holder because as you can see this anchor had loosened and wasn't holding the fixture properly. So what we're going to do today is repair this area and to do that, we need to get these anchors out of the way. So I'm just going to knock this right on through the wall. Now that the dry wall anchors are gone, I'm going to use a dry wall patch and some pre-mixed joint compound to mug this in. But before I can do that, I need to address this area here where the paper which is the top layer of the dry wall has come lose.
Once you have it scoured, the paper should easily peel away. The next step is to sand the texture off of this area so that we can apply the patch to a smooth surface. Now that I have the area smoothed, I'm going to apply this peel and stick patches right over the hole; so this one will go here. Now what's really great about these patches is they have this metal in the middle so I can put that over the hole and I don't have to patch the hole first. Okay, now that those are in place, I'm going to mud these in. I'm going to start with the joint compound in the middle and then feather it out toward the edges. Just make sure that you put enough joint compound on that you don't see the mess; you need to completely cover that. And you don't have to worry about your spatula marks because you're going to texture over these anyway.
All right we've let this dry for about an hour so now we're ready to move on. The texture that's already on this wall is a standard texture called a brush texture. To get this look, we've got a brush just like this that you can pick up at your local hardware store or home center. Now what you want to do is load up the same joint compound. This is what we use to make the repair. Just load it up on your brush like this. When you're applying the joint compound to the brush, you want to make sure that you put it on the whole brush evenly. To apply the texture, push your brush firmly onto the wall and then pull it straight off. Now each time you do this be sure and change the direction of your brush so that your pattern keeps changing. Also make sure to keep overlapping the texture like this. What you don't want to do is twist the brush when it's against the wall. And that's all there is to it. We've made the repair, added texture and now what we have to do is let this dry, add a coat of paint and the wall will look like new.
