Eric: So today, we are in the basement and I cleaned up my workshop table because my friend Bob here is an expert on glass. He is glazer, he does this for a living. And my windows are in really bad shape. So he was so nice to come here and show us how to this because I have tried this and I have screwed it up so really badly.
Actually I brought this thing, this is called a putty chaser and you put a drill on it and it destroyed the wood. Maybe if you were careful, you could do a good job. But I did not.
Bob: Few things that we need to start with you need to get yourself a putty knife. I find the ones that have a little bend like this, it works really great and I am just what I am used to using. And also the thing about putty knife, to get a really nice job, the key is to have a stiff putty knife. You do not want one that has a lot of flex or bend to it because you have got to apply constant pressure to the putty as you are running it to make the bead nice and smooth.
And another thing you need is either a gasket scraper or a putty knife with a sharpened edge just something that you can knock the loose putty out. This putty is really old and dried out and as you could see it is kind of chipping off and flaking and so this is going to be really, really easy to clean out just trying to get in there--.
Eric: Look at that. It is in bad shape.
Bob: You want to go nice and easy because you do not want to break the glass that is in there. And if we do break it, it is not a big deal to replace but if you can avoid it, you want to avoid it. And when you are scraping this out, you have got to be careful because if you look, there are points that actually hold the glass in, it is a little piece of metal, Eric, right there.
Eric: The little triangles.
Bob: A little triangle and that is called the point. So again, you just bust all the old putty out. Sometimes it goes a little harder than this. This is when you doing it just to reglaze like this, the most important thing is that you want to get the real loose stuff off. If some stuff is still nice and tight on the wood, it is okay to leave it.
Eric: So it does not have to be completely.
Bob: Right, exactly. Exactly, we actually call it a spot glazing. Now, this is all pretty clean. You want to just make sure you get a nice smooth edge, you just clean this up just so that you are not going over any loose stuff because then that will cause the putty knife to stick so you want to just get all the dust out of there.
Now, I brought, putty that I use is called Dap. Take your putty knife and get a handful of putty here. You want to kind of squish it all in to your hands and get it all nice and soft and pliable.
Eric: It helps if you had latex gloves, I forgot to get some.
Bob: You want to get the putty nice and warm so it is pliable just like kneading bread. Get it all nice and soft and sometimes we have older putty that has been sitting around your basement for a little while and you want to reuse it and notice when you open up the can, if air gets into it, it starts to dry out.
Take a little bit of linseed oil and you do not need much, just like a little capful. Put a little linseed oil in there and you knead it around a little bit. That softens it up and that makes it nice. Now, what we do is you take the knife and you can hold it and you will see as I am doing this I kind of flip it around the knife, I use it every which way but use it the way that you feel the most comfortable with it. You actually pack the putty in there.
First, I just go right down the line, you do not have to be real neat about it. We could clean it up afterwards. Just pack it in there. So it is all nice and into that grove so you do not have any voids in there.
And then what I do is I take the knife and if you can see, I am kind of putting this edge against the wood, like this. And I have got my angle like this with the front edge picked up so that I am not dragging the putty and pulling them out because I am going with it.
And what I do is I push in tight like this and I find the angle,
