Occasionally, from time to time, you may have to stay in a piece of wood to match an existing one. It can be a challenge but I have got a couple of tricks that may make the job go to a little simpler. The first step is to go ahead and take the piece of wood that you want match to the paint store. A good sales person should be able to give you a really great costume match in about 30 minutes or less. Once you are back at the project, go ahead and read the directions on the paint can. Typically, they will tell you to shake the can, stir it, whatever you have to do and apply the stain, maybe let it sit for a few minutes and then wipe it off. You can sometimes get into trouble here. Wiping the stain off may take too much of it away. And what I find is often a good thing to do is take brush and go ahead and apply the stain and over brush it, continue to brush the stain, it will leave some excess stain on but in certain instances, it will allow you to achieve a perfect match.

Okay, my sample here right now, it is still a little glossy because it is wet but trust me, when it dries, it is going to be a perfect match. You can see the grain of the wood coming through and the colors right on the money. It is easy, you can do it. Just take your time and make sure you get the right stain color to begin with.
