Counting Steps
Here's yet another movement and positioning drill that's a real winner. Have each player before each hit try to fit in up to eight positioning steps. It may sound simple but it's not. The result will be an increased level of intensity for almost every player who tries this exercise. Have the player start off cooperatively rallying back and forth. Then once they get a feel for the exercise, have them play competitively with groundstroke games. An obvious option is to perform the same drill with serving and regular scoring to most effectively transition this skill and movement habit to real match play.
