How to Use Ceramic Tile Nippers by HomeAdditionPlus

Hi! I am Mark Donovan from HomeAdditionPlus.com and today I am going to show you how to cut ceramic tile using ceramic tile nippers.

Ceramic tile nippers are excellent for cutting arcs or circular sections of tile as we have here. They are also great for making a regular cut as well. To a cut ceramic tile with ceramic tile nippers, first use a marker or pencil to draw the particular line that you want along the length of the ceramic tile.

Next, using a utility knife, scroll along the surface of the tile over the mark that you made in the ceramic tile. This helps to create kind of like a relief point when you go to start nipping the tile to ensure that you do not over nip the tile and have to start all over again.

Next, before cutting this ceramic tile with the nippers, put on some safety glasses as fragments of the tile fly everywhere. And also put on at least one glove to firmly hold the piece of ceramic tile. Now hold the tile in one hand firmly over a waste can or basket of some sort and begin with your ceramic tile nippers making very small nips at the edges of the tile you do not want to take large nips, otherwise you will crack the pieces of the tile and have to start all over again. So we take small pieces out and so we work our way inward toward the line. [Demonstration]

As we get near the edge, we need to make sure we take very small nips. We do not want to over do it and over bite and again have to start over with the new piece of tile. And we are almost done here. We will just make a few minor additional nips. Now with the tile nipped to the line that we have made we are going to use a 60 grit piece of sand paper. You could also use a rubbing stone and just smooth down the edges of the cut that you made because they are very sharp edges here and you put the tile in and it look bad as well as potentially cuts somebody in later point. [Demonstration]

And then once that is done, just have a damp rag and wipe off the remaining residual line of mark and your tiles all set.

So those are the basic steps for cutting ceramic tile with ceramic tile nippers. One word of caution I guess is when you make these types of cuts it is usually preferable to position them in a location where the cut is actually not going to be visibly seen or in a low visibility area. As the cut is slightly rugged compared to using a wet saw or a tile cutter. So that is it. If you have any other home improvement questions visit us at HomeAdditionPlus.com today.
