Welcome to Dezign in a Minute, brought to you by www.interiordezign.com, the premier interior design site on the internet. This video is about the Psychology of colors and in particular, warm and cool colors.

The greens and blues of the color wheel are referred to as the cool colors. These tend to slow our heartbeat, relax our muscles and therefore lower our temperature. Violets appears warm or cool depending on the proportions of the parent colors. With a large proportion of the blue, violet will appear cool but the opposite occurs if the dominant parent color is red. The violet will then appear warmer.

The reds, yellows and oranges of the color wheel are referred to as the warm colors. These colors have the effect of triggering the release of adrenaline, raising blood pressure, increasing your rate of breath and therefore increasing your temperature as the body's metabolism speeds up. The stronger the color the more intense the effect.

There are variations of each hue, as we know from the addition of black and white to each color producing shades and tints. The lighter the hue becomes it generally becomes cooler. When adding a smaller amount of a cooler hue to a red, this creates a cool red. When adding a small amount of a warmer hue to a green, it produces a warm green.

So putting this knowledge to use is relatively simple. If you have rooms in a building that are generally sunny and warm, it can pay to use a cooler color scheme. The opposite is true for the rooms on the cold side of the building. The color scheme tell us if they are warmer.
