Installing base molding is a very popular do-it-yourself project. Base molding is simpler to install than crown molding. As with crown molding, before you start this project, take the time to cut the four sample pieces that will guide you through the project. Installing base molding takes just basic DIY skills. On a scale of one to five with five being very difficult, this project is about a one.
Always ensure you have the following tools and supplies when installing base molding; miter saw or miter box, scrap base molding, hammer or pneumatic nailer, cock with a cocking gun, finishing nails, electronic stud finder, carpenter's pencil, tape measure and safety glasses. Okay, let's install some base molding.
First, measure the first wall with the tape measure from corner to corner. Identify if your first corner is inside or outside and get the appropriate base molding example. Adjust the miter saw according to the sample and place the example piece on the saw and verify that the sample matches the blade adjustment that you just did. Cut the first end of the base molding. Transfer the wall measurement to the base molding and make the next cut in the same manner. Find the stud location on the wall using an electronic stud finder and mark the location of each with a carpenter's pencil. Tack the molding in place in each stud location using a finished nailer. Work your way around the room cutting and nailing, molding in place. With all bases installed, apply cock to all joints and gaps at the base molding intersections and the top of all molding pieces where they meet the wall.
