Installing crown molding is a very popular do-it-yourself project. Unfortunately, it can be confusing leading to lots of frustrations and wasted materials.
Many techniques are available but the technique that will be presented here is simple and straight-forward, making this project much easier for the average do-it-yourselfer. Before you start this project, take the time to cut the sample pieces that will guide you through the project. Installing crown molding takes planning and good carpentry skills. On a scale of one to five, with five being very difficult, this project is about, a three and a half. Always ensure you have the following tools and supplies when installing crown molding; a compound miter saw, scrap crown molding, cock and a cocking gun, hammer or finishing nailer, finished nails, electronic stud finder, a carpenter's pencil, tape measure and safety glasses. So, let's get started.
Start off by measuring the first wall with the tape measure from corner to corner. Identify if your first corner is inside or outside and get the appropriate crown molding example. Place the example piece on the saw and adjust the saw to match the cut profile of the example piece. Cut the first end of the crown molding. Transfer the wall measurement to the crown molding and make the next cut in the same manner. Find the stud location on the wall using an electronic stud finder and mark the location of each with a carpenter's pencil. Hold the crown molding up to the wall.
Make sure the top edge meets the ceiling squarely and the bottom flat edge meets the wall squarely. Tack the molding in place at each stud location using a finish nailer. Work your way around the room, cutting and nailing, molding in place. When all crown molding is hung, as a finishing touch, apply cock to all joints and gaps at the crown molding intersections and the top and bottom of all crown pieces where they meet the wall and ceiling.
