Welcome to Total Training for Adobe Flex 3 Rich Internet and AIR Applications. I am James Talbert and I have worked for Adobe for the past seven years. I have worked on numerous Rich Internet applications for Fortune 500 companies. I have authored books, and I have participated in conferences worldwide.

In this chapter, we will begin to understand the different types of applications that we can build using the Flex framework, including Rich Internet Application or RIA for short as well as Adobe Integrated Runtime Applications, AIR for short.

We will also understand the importance of Adobe Flash Player 9 and look at some of the new functionality in the dot release of this incredible piece of software. We will examine how MXML and XML page markup language and ActionScript 3 can come together to produce SWF files that integrate with so many external data sources. SWF files are amazing and are changing the face of the Internet.
