Hey, everyone! I am Eric Rochow and this is Real World Green. Today, we are going to talk about recycling. But we are not going to talk about recycling plastic, we are going to talk about recycling glass.
Glass doesn't really get as much place as plastic when you're talking about greening the earth and recycling all that kind of thing. But glass takes just as long the breakdown in the landfills, in the environment as plastic does. Some glass can take millions of years to decompose. I mean, remember walking along the beach and you see come beach glass, wash up on the shore, that's glass, and it's relatively new glass and it's not really that worn down.
By recycling glass we do a number of good things. First of all we reduce the amount of air pollution created in creating new glass by 20% and we reduce the amount of water pollution by 50%. So that's great, they basically take this, they grind it up and they make new glasses out of it.
The United States only recycles 30% of all the glasses it has. So we can definitely step up to the plate and do a much, much better job of recycling.
Before you put your glass in the recycle bin, consider reusing it for something else. These jelly jars are really good in the workshop. You can hold nails and screws and parts and stuff, paint, stuff like that.
In the kitchen, they are great too. I use them to hold little bits of food. I use them also to make a vinaigrette dressing, and I have enough dressing for the whole week. I just shake it up every time, pour it around. Life is good, I don't have to buy another container to hold that. But I think the best use I found in recycling glass in a very green way is that jelly jars make really, really nice scotch tumblers.
So what do you want, you are green and you are Scottish. Alright, that's real green, come to the green-house, green-house.tv. It's a bunch of people there like yourselves. Post some items, answer some questions, post some pictures if you like. Send us emails, I also like to get emails. If you have some green ideas, send them along, alright. Make it a great day. Cheers!
