Hey! Welcome to watchmojo.com. I am your host Melissa and today mark the beginning of celebrations of Hanukkah. Now, Hanukkah is also known as the Festival of Lights or the Feast of the Consecration. It is one of the most joyous times in the Jewish New Year. Now, the reasons for celebrating are two fold. The first is that of the Victory of the Maccabees over the Seleucid Empire in 165 B.C. And, the second reason is that of the miracle of the oil.

According to the Talmud, after the victory of the Maccabees, there was only enough oil to burn the eternal flame in the temple for one day but miraculously, it lasted for eight days, which is the reason why there are eight candles in the menorah, which as you know has become a symbol of Hanukkah, which means dedication and refers to the fact that the temple was rededicated after the victory of the Maccabees.

Now, Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah by lighting the menorah for eight nights with olive oil, by eating food fried in oil especially latkes and jelly donuts and by playing with a dreidel, which is a flat top.

So, to everybody celebrating, Happy Hanukkah!
