Earthquake, unpredictable, unpreventable and sometimes deadly. When the next big one hits, will you be ready? Here are five things you can do to prepare yourself for an earthquake.

#1 Make your room more safe by moving heavy things from above your bed or make sure they are well well secured. The Northridge quake struck at 4:30 in the morning, so you want to be as safe as possible when you are in bed.

#2 Keep a pair of shoes by your bed, you want to avoid injury from any broken object, as well be able to exit the building properly when it is okay to do so.

#3 Establish an out of state telephone contact to call after disastrous and keep the number in your wallet. Instruct your family to use the number to relay information about yourself among one another.

#4 Make an emergency kit, either just like the ones you had at school when you were little. Some essential to include are first-aid items, a flashlight, extra medication, bottle of water, canned food, a sweater and the number of your out of state contact person.

#5 Be aware of the dangers in your room such as glass windows and any unsecured furniture select space areas under desks or in support of doorways. When it is safe to leave your building, use the stairs not the elevator and above all, stay calm and remember what your third grade teacher taught you. For News 29, this is Brigitta Hoffner (ph).
