Beadboard panel ceiling in a basement

My question is how do you put it up? Do you have to have drywall up or can you nail to the floor joist?

Welcome to the forums. If you are talking about the 4x8x1/4" panels, yes you need a good substrate, and drywall is adequate. The reason is that it will sag between joists without being glued ans stapled ( narrow crown) to a substrate.

If you plan on bead board planks, they are nailed to the joists through the tongue

I have done it glued to the bottom of the joists with just a few nails to help hold it in place while the glue dried. Getting good butt joints is difficult where they are not backed by wood. I found it best to cut a strip of wood or panelling and glue to the back side with an inch or two sticking out proud which provides a gluing lip to help hold the edges of the panels in line.
