Crooked Tree

Every year I look at this hoping it will improve but it doesn't.

Not sure why, all trees were staked for the first couple years but this guy is just a few degrees off center.

I recall this area was heavy clay so I dug as big of hole as possible so I doubt it has really expanded beyond the initial hole.

Assume dig down outside the initial hole, push a little, pull a little then restake?

I would do as you mentioned. Since your lawn is so nice I would carefully cut the sod with a shovel and roll it back. Do your digging and get the tree vertical. Then roll the sod back in place. Don't forget to water very regularly as the disturbed sod will not have deep roots.
