plywood backing boards on flat pack

Hi,
Can anyone tell me the purpose of backing boards on furniture? Does it have any structural significance?
I have discovered mould on the backing board on some flat pack chest of drawers, and have cleaned it, but I know mould can be pretty persistant, so I'm thinking of just removing the board as the wood of the furniture is unaffected by the mould.
Would removing it allow the interior of the furniture to be open to futher mould?
Any input would be much appreciated!

Welcome to the forums!

While the back piece doesn't do a lot it does help prevent the dresser from racking. I'd clean off the mold and then either paint or poly the back piece, that should make it harder for it to absorb moisture.
