Best way to whiten T-shirts and other whites w/o chlorine bleach?

Thinking primarily cotton T-shirts and underwear but also clothes of other materials. Looking to do a big bunch at once and ideally don't want to have to hand-manipulate, just dump it in and let it soak. Either store-bought or home-brew.

Thanks!

My Mom always used "laundry bluing". We also used it on whitewall tires, horses fetlocks and forelocks, etc. Should be with laundry stuff near the RIT dyes possibly. White Brite is one brand.

You could also try something like Oxy Clean.

I was going to suggest OxyClean also. I don't think they sell bluing anymore, AFAIK. However, I'm not clear if the OP is looking for green products or not since he posted in Green Cleaning. I don't think Oxyclean is a green product.

Yeah they still sell Mrs. Stewart's laundry bluing. Not sure how many people use it anymore or even know what it's for.

Guess it depends where you live tho. There is no Mrs. Stewart's in this area, but maybe online. Never even heard of it.

I don't know if they still sell it or not but 25+ yrs ago when I lived in fla my well had a lot of iron and my whites would start to look dingy after several washings so once a month I bought a box of white dye. It worked well!
