Hello,
We have a four year old central air unit and a five year old furnace. This summer I have noticed that when using the air on "Auto" for the fan,the fan will blow continually. I have the thermostat (an old round manual Honeywell) set at 70 degrees. It seems to get quite cool but will not shut down. Is one possibility a bad thermostat? This winter the furnace blowing heat seemed to turn itself off at the appropriate time. We interested in upgrading to a programmable Honey well but the one I bought to try out did not work when I hooked it up. Our old round one has 6 wires and the new one indicates it only works with up to five wires. This house was once zoned but is no longer zoned. The wires on the old unit are as follows:Green,Blue,Brown,Red,White,Yellow. The Honeywell documentation in the new unit indicated it would not work with 6 wires and talked about them being "Multistage" (does this refer to "zoning"?). In summary my questions are as follows:
1)Why won't the air conditioning turn off?
2) What type of programmable thermostat do we need for this unit?
Since it is no longer zoned is there a wire I could eliminate?
Thanks so much for any input.

 I am using a relatively "new" but unused for more than 10 years window unit to help keep cool while getting estimates for a new CAC. (Those contractors are slow!) The window unit seems to be not cooling as much as it did a few weeks ago and I suspect I need to add some coolant/refrigerant. I haven't got a clue how to do this. The old unit probably had freon but don't I have to use some other material now to protect the ozone layer? Where do I get the stuff? How do I know what to buy? How much? How do I install it? Do I have to take the unit out of the window? Is it installed from the inside or the outside?
I suspect this is relatively simple but can't seem to find the info on how to do this.
Thanks in advance for your help!Read More
