Kelvinator not "Kelvinating"
Hi,
I have an old (probally 20 years) Kelvinator Deluxe window AC unit. The unit itself is relatively small (maybe 3500 btu) but also better than every unit we've purchased since. All of a sudden, last night after I turned it off (as it was raining) I turned it back on and it was screeching like something was seized internally (condenser, or compressor maybe?). I took off the front cover and the fan closesest to the filter (in the front) is rotating freely when the unit is turned on (so I'm assuming it's not the source). It's hard to tell exactly where the noise is coming from because I haven't taken the whole thing apart. Any immediate advice before I do? I'm just wondering if it's even worth me investing the time and possibly replacement parts for it, when AC units are so cheap now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Ed's right, but it was a screeching sound? That seems like it could only be one of the fans. If the inside fan is free, check the outside fan. It may just have something stuck in it or need some tightening. Not worth much time, but that unit's probably a whole lot better built than any replacement you'll find these days.
